This directly contradicts the bank\u2019s green credentials and violates its commitments to the goals of the Paris Agreement.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>On 29 September, Macquarie took part in a new <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tamboran.com\/sec-filings\/all-sec-filings\/content\/0001628280-25-043923\/trc-20250929.htm\">$180 million deal<\/a> for Tamboran Resources to develop its Shenandoah South pilot gas fracking project in Beetaloo. is celebrated globally for prioritising green finance, continues to pour millions into new fossil fuel projects that are entirely incompatible with a safe climate.\n\nThe Australian Financial Review has reported that Macquarie took part in a $180 million financing package for Tamboran Resources to develop its Shenandoah South pilot fracking project in the Beetaloo Basin. This comes only weeks after Macquarie shareholders representing over $17 billion in company shares and more than 10,000 Australians demanded that your company come clean on its financing of fossil fuel expansion. Beetaloo frackers should not be eligible for another cent while they are unable to demonstrate they are on a Paris-aligned trajectory.\n\nYour decision to back Tamboran \u2013 a company intent on opening potentially one of the largest gas fields in Australia \u2013 flies in the face of climate science, investor expectations, and Macquarie\u2019s own stated commitments to the goals of the Paris Agreement and net zero emissions. \n\nThe Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has made it clear: there is no room for new gas fields like Beetaloo if we are to avoid catastrophic climate impacts.\n\nFracking the Beetaloo could unleash some of the largest untapped gas reserves in the world, locking in tens of millions of tonnes of emissions every year. Financing such expansion not only jeopardises our collective ability to meet the climate goals of the Paris Agreement, but also exposes Macquarie to serious greenwashing, stranded capital, and reputational risks \u2013 particularly as public opposition and regulatory scrutiny continue to grow.\n\nMacquarie cannot credibly claim to be a climate leader while funding companies whose entire business models depend on developing new fossil fuel projects. As you have said, \u201cThere\u2019s just a lot of change we need to do to stop our planet from burning.\u201d [1]\n\nOne of the most basic changes Macquarie must make is to rule out any further finance to companies pursuing new and expanded fossil fuel projects.\n\nI call on Macquarie Group to:\n\n1. Rule out any further financial support to companies involved in fracking or fossil fuel infrastructure development in the Beetaloo Basin.\n\n2. Adopt and publish robust fossil fuel exclusion policies consistent with a credible 1.5\u00b0C-aligned transition pathway.\n\n3. Commit to ending finance for any client pursuing new or expanded coal, oil and gas projects, and require all fossil fuel clients to present time-bound, science-based transition plans aligned with the Paris goals.\n\nAustralians expect better from a financial institution that has a reputation for climate leadership. The world urgently needs to wind down fossil fuel production to avoid catastrophic warming \u2013 we cannot keep sanctioning new or expanded projects that will only make the problem worse.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As a new gas field, Beetaloo is not compatible with limiting global warming to 1.5\u00b0C in line with the Paris Agreement. If Beetaloo proceeds at full scale, as the gas companies intend, Beetaloo would become one of Australia\u2019s largest and highest emitting gas fields, operating into the <a href=\"https:\/\/www.listcorp.com\/asx\/eeg\/empire-energy-group-limited\/news\/australian-domestic-gas-outlook-conference-presentation-3011636.html\">2070<\/a>s. Burning the gas from this full-scale Beetaloo would produce an estimated 1.1 billion tonnes of CO\u2082-equivalent, equal to Australia\u2019s largest coal plant operating for more than <a href=\"https:\/\/www.originenergy.com.au\/wp-content\/uploads\/223\/Origin_2024_Sustainability_Report.pdf\">83 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Despite Macquarie\u2019s <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/macquaries-climate-credentials-up-in-smoke\/\">green reputation<\/a> and public support for combatting climate change, Macquarie is financing both major Beetaloo gas fracking developers, Tamboran Resources and Beetaloo Energy Australia (formerly <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/empire-energy-gas-fracking-fantasies\/\">Empire Energy<\/a>).<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>Macquarie doesn\u2019t just have one horse in the race to commercialise Beetaloo \u2013 <em>Macquarie is betting on Beetaloo gas.<\/em><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>As well as the recent $180 million deal, Macquarie provided a <a href=\"https:\/\/ir.tamboran.com\/sec-filings\/all-sec-filings\/content\/0001628280-24-052613\/trc-20241231.htm\">$35 million loan<\/a> to Tamboran Resources in December 2024 to \u201csupport [Tamborans\u2019s] ongoing development activities,\u201d all of which are <a href=\"https:\/\/www.tamboran.com\/assets\/\">focused<\/a> on exploiting Beetaloo gas.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This loan itself came only weeks after Macquarie had pulled together a <a href=\"https:\/\/www.marketforces.org.au\/macquaries-climate-credentials-up-in-smoke\/\">$65 million<\/a> financing package for Beetaloo Energy\u2019s gas fracking operations \u2013 a deal that was worth over one third of the value of the entire company. Macquarie has been financing Beetaloo Energy for the past <a href=\"https:\/\/empireenergygroup.net\/wp-content\/uploads\/COMMITMENT-LETTERS-ANNOUNCEMENT.pdf\">15 years<\/a>.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>At Macquarie\u2019s AGM in July, more than 10,000 Australians, Macquarie investors holding over $17 billion in company shares, and dozens of protesters picketing the meeting had one message for Macquarie:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p><strong>Don\u2019t give the Beetaloo frackers another cent!<\/strong><\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>This message has clearly not sunk in yet.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>A grotesque move like this calls for a direct response from the person who calls the shots. As CEO, Shemara Wikramanayake has the power to shut Macquarie\u2019s door to the gas frackers for good.
