I’m writing to demand that you take urgent action to end the coal, oil and gas expansion plans of portfolio companies.

A recent report, The Fossil Fuel Expansion Index, has found that the average super fund’s default investment option has 5.8% of its members’ share investments in a global list of 200 companies with the biggest fossil fuel expansion plans.[1] If this average were consistent across Australia’s $4.3 trillion superannuation industry, over $130 billion of Australians’ retirement savings could be invested in this small but dangerous group of companies driving us towards climate collapse.

These companies, termed the FFX 200, are the world’s most unforgivable climate polluters. Every company in this index is actively undermining the climate goals of the Paris Agreement and impeding the clean energy transition by expanding fossil fuels.

Projected emissions from the expansion plans of FFX 200 companies alone would eat up more than the entire remaining global carbon budget for keeping global warming to 1.5°C.[2] While the Intergovernmental Panel on Climate Change has determined that emissions from existing fossil fuel infrastructure will take us past this critical 1.5°C threshold, the expansion plans of FFX 200 companies would guarantee a trajectory towards catastrophic levels of warming.[3]

Our super fund has a duty to ensure a stable retirement for members, which means taking decisive and effective action to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. As such, I demand that you immediately implement the four recommendations set out in the report:

1. Prioritise FFX 200 companies for rapidly escalating stewardship actions, and demonstrate your actions are driving down emissions.
2. Set the expectation for FFX 200 companies that no further capital should be spent on fossil fuel growth – and make it public.
3. Publish a plan for raising pressure on FFX 200 companies and report on progress to us members.
4. Publicly divest from FFX 200 companies if they remain unwilling to align their business plans with the climate goals of the Paris Agreement.

I’m ashamed that AustralianSuper has featured as a case study in this report for its significant stake in two of Australia’s biggest climate wreckers, oil and gas producer Woodside and coal miner Whitehaven. AustralianSuper has two choices when it comes to Woodside and Whitehaven: use its leverage as a major investor to urgently deliver a Paris-aligned ‘no fossil fuel growth’ strategy from these companies, or failing that, dump its shares. There is no justification for owning such a large stake in either company unless our fund is pulling out all the stops to end their polluting fossil fuel growth plans.

AustralianSuper has a duty to ensure a stable retirement for members, which means taking decisive and effective action to mitigate the worst impacts of climate change. As such, I demand that you immediately implement the four recommendations set out in the report:

Lastly, it was great to see Cbus include a case study on Woodside in its most recent sustainability report. Cbus has recommended that Woodside aligns its capital allocation with the Paris Agreement’s climate goals – can you please confirm that this means allocating no further capital to new oil and gas projects, as required under any credible Paris-aligned emissions reduction scenario?[4]

For example, taking a principled voting position against all resolutions at Santos’ 2025 annual general meeting, noting that the fund views Santos’ plans to expand oil and gas production as “imprudent.”[4]

However, I would appreciate the fund publishing an escalation framework for companies like these, outlining the steps Vision Super will take when they refuse to address investors’ concerns and double down on fossil fuel expansion. As such, I request that you immediately implement the four recommendations set out in the report:
